In September, REXI successfully completed Performance Mock-Up (PMU) testing for the 1723 S Michigan window wall project, compliance with AAMA 501 standard.
The 1723 Project in Chicago is a hotel-style apartment complex with approximately 20,000 square meters, including 7,000 square meters of window walls. Designed by the esteemed architectural firm Gensler, it features a contemporary exterior and employs REXI's independently developed UW180 window wall system, which meets structural and insulation standards. This system features a glass panel integrated into the interlayer beam, representing a significant advancement in window wall technology by achieving a glass curtain wall appearance without sacrificing structural integrity.
The UW180 system, developed by REXI's research and development team over six months, involved creating over 100 aluminum profile molds. Various materials were used for auxiliary components, including sealing strips and gaskets to ensure optimal physical properties, such as air-tightness and water-tightness. This system allows for flexible combinations based on local climatic conditions, optimizing cost efficiency and reducing carbon emissions.
The INTERTEK laboratory in Shanghai, China, is known for its rigorous testing standards, preferred by leading American design firms and consulting companies. REXI's team exceeded original design specifications by conducting multiple air and water tightness tests to simulate various lifetime scenarios, including extreme weather events, ensuring functionality post-disaster. From August 27 to September 5, a comprehensive series of tests was conducted over ten days. These tests including wind pressure testing, air-tightness assessments, water tightness evaluations, horizontal and vertical interstory drift measurements, thermal cycling, and extreme wind pressure tests. The repeated air and water tightness tests after each deformation were essential for evaluating the system's adaptability.
REXI's UW180 system successfully passed AAMA 501 all evaluations on the first attempt, receiving high praise from INTERTEK's technical director and Gensler's architectural lead in China.
